From the invention of early microscopes to the development of germ theory, antibiotics, and vaccines, you\u2019ll learn about key scientific breakthroughs and the people behind them. Along the way, we\u2019ll examine how culture and history influence the way we understand and respond to microorganisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selected Projects &amp; Activities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This quarter we&#8217;ll work on a few activities, including a project to propose an official Washington State microbe where you\u2019ll team up to champion a tiny contender, making your case with science, creativity, and a bit of persuasive flair. Along the way, you\u2019ll also help build engaging online resources that spotlight the most exciting moments in microbiology\u2019s past, giving educators new ways to connect history with science. Expect collaboration, creativity, and a chance to see not only what microbes can do, but how people can use curiosity, ingenuity, and science to discover, create, and implement change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Should Take This Course (and Why)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This course is a great fit for first-year students curious about health, medicine, public health, and\/or history. This scientific interest has also sparked a deeper curiosity about the history of infectious diseases\u2014especially how and why pathogens spread, what we have done to combat them, and the stigma that often accompanies diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside my passion for microbiology, I have always loved history, which has shaped my teaching approach where I take time to explore past pandemics and outbreaks to highlight both the breakthroughs that improved human health and the moments when public health decisions were influenced more by bias than by scientific evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am excited to teach this course, which was is inspired by my work with the American Society for Microbiology\u2019s Center for the History of Microbiology Archives, as well as my experience as a Science Ambassador Fellow at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention which allowed me to visit their museum where I saw many of the historic artifacts we\u2019ll explore in this class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Email<\/strong>: <a href=\"mailto:slic@uw.edu\">slic@uw.edu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Discovery Core Experience May be taken as BCORE 110 (Natural Sciences) or BCORE 107 (Social Sciences) About This Course This course explores the history of microbiology and how microbes have shaped our world.
