As a result, students in the degree program are better prepared to more career pathways, including those that involve collaboration among disciplines and professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStudying how people think and behave can apply to jobs outside of a clinical setting,\u201d said Dr. Eric Stewart, associate professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences and faculty coordinator for the program. \u201cGraduates will be able to tailor how they market themselves based on their interests and career aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewart, who received his doctorate in Clinical-Community Psychology, joined UW Bothell in 2009 to start the Community Psychology program, but notes that the word community was limiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver time, we brought on faculty with more diverse research and teaching interests,\u201d he said. \u201cThis new program reflects their expertise \u2014 and responds to students\u2019 requests for a more general degree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaching across disciplines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn this current environment where employers are interested in the concept of people bringing their whole selves to work, this discipline is invaluable,\u201d he said. \u201cIn a business setting, there\u2019s the obvious, such as a job in human resources. But it also applies to management and leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psychology is also used in the STEM fields, he noted. \u201cWe have students in computer science interested in the program so they can design applications that are helpful and more user-friendly. 足彩app哪个是正规的y learn that behavior and environment affect brain chemistry, so they learn to take those factors into account in their designs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To prepare students to work, help and live with others in an increasingly multicultural world, there is also a component of diversity and equity in the new major\u2019s coursework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHelping students manage this environment creatively and constructively \u2014 and not fearfully \u2014 is part of the learning objectives of each class,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expert, caring faculty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Stewart encourages interested students to visit the program\u2019s faculty webpages<\/a> to learn more about the professors, their backgrounds and their current work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c足彩app哪个是正规的y\u2019ll get an understanding of how deeply faculty care about their teaching practices,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd equally important, they\u2019ll see the range of faculty expertise and diversity of research being done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewart said he is already looking ahead to capstone projects, the final assignment for graduating seniors that encapsulates their learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause we don\u2019t have graduate students,\u201d he said, \u201cour undergrads have great opportunities to engage in research. Many capstones will be based on actual, direct experience of doing the work. That will make them stand out in the hiring process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPsychological perspectives inform so much about how human beings work and get along in the world,\u201d Steward said. \u201cHelping this program evolve over time to meet our students\u2019 needs and fully utilize our faculty expertise has been very rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
