{"id":18353,"date":"2020-09-11T10:54:58","date_gmt":"2020-09-11T10:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=18353"},"modified":"2023-06-08T18:26:23","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T18:26:23","slug":"cinnamon-hillyard-student-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/11\/cinnamon-hillyard-student-success","title":{"rendered":"Hillyard connects student success programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/cinnamon-hillyard.jpg\" alt=\"Cinnamon Hillyard\" class=\"wp-image-26209\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cinnamon Hillyard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/ias\/faculty-and-staff\/cinnamon-hillyard\">Cinnamon Hillyard<\/a>, who had been serving as associate vice chancellor for undergraduate learning, took on an expanded role this summer as associate vice chancellor for student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a new position, effective July 1, created in a reorganization by Vice Chancellor for <a href=\"\/academic-affairs\">Academic Affairs<\/a> Sharon A. Jones to center on the academic life cycle of students, align resources and ensure a consistent vision of student success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you ask anyone on campus, of course they want our students to be successful. It\u2019s everybody\u2019s work,\u201d Hillyard said. \u201cIt\u2019s also now my primary responsibility.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From every angle <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hillyard thinks about the student experience from every angle, bridging admissions, orientation and transition, curriculum and services. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m the one who makes sure people are talking to each other,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, I want to keep our commitments to diversity and equity at the forefront of all our decision making,\u201d Hillyard said. \u201cWe have seen unprecedented times this year. 足彩app哪个是正规的se struggles have uncovered many areas we can improve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to just let the storm pass and hope we get back to normal,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to make real changes in our systems for student success. I want to make sure this crisis makes our institution and our students stronger.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An associate professor in the <a href=\"\/ias\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>, Hillyard led the First Year and Pre-Major Program since 2016. Her new portfolio encompasses that work \u2014 which includes Discovery Core courses for entering students, and pre-major and pre-health advising \u2014 plus oversight of the Writing &amp; Communication Center and the Quantitative Skills Center. At the QSC, she is returning to her roots because she was its founding director 20 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hillyard is thinking of undergraduate students\u2019 four-year experience \u2014 instead of only the first two years \u2014 and more, including the experience of graduate students. She\u2019s collaborating with deans, other staff in the Division of Academic Affairs, the 足彩app哪个是正规的 Diversity Center, the Division of 足彩app哪个是正规的 Affairs, the Division of Enrollment Management and the Office of Institutional Research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning innovations <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One example of the kind of innovation she hopes to move forward is the proposed Data Analytics minor, which would be the first minor to include electives from all five UW Bothell schools. It could be available in the fall of next year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, during the coronavirus pandemic, Hillyard also has to think about how to knit and weave all the campus programs and services together remotely.
