Eva Navarijo, advising director in UW Bothell\u2019s School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences<\/a>, says a lot of students, aware of how stressed everyone is because of the coronavirus pandemic, begin conversations apologetically, \u201cI\u2019m sorry to bother you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navarijo understands that concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll of us have a lot on our plates. All of our schools are building things, creating new documents, developing new virtual tools to help facilitate online learning,\u201d said Navarijo, one of three advisers who normally would be found in the IAS office in Founders Hall (UW1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Navarijo and her colleagues also want to remove that concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the academic advisers at UW Bothell are still a resource that students can turn to \u2014 remotely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s new, and we\u2019re going to make it work. It\u2019s certainly a disruption to normal operations, but it\u2019s not a stop,\u201d Navarijo said. \u201cWe\u2019re still meeting face-to-face. It\u2019s just electronically right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norm Wright, assistant director of advising for pre-major<\/a> students, would normally be working with five other professional advisers, plus five student peer advisers, in the 足彩app哪个是正规的 Success Center. Now, they\u2019re working by video conferencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still here. We want to see students. This is what we do,\u201d Wright said, \u201cand I know for me and my team, this is what brings us joy \u2014 to be able to interact with students. We want to be able to support them as they pursue their education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, when students want to check on their progress toward a major, it\u2019s a conversation in an online \u201croom.\u201d Sometimes, it is also a longer conversation because of additional concerns. Some advising sessions that normally took 30 minutes, now take an hour, Wright said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facing new issues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Navarijo has similar experiences. She\u2019s still hearing from juniors and seniors thinking about graduating, making sure courses count toward their major. But there\u2019s also the feeling that students are missing the smaller classrooms, the faculty mentorships and sense of community that were the reasons they chose UW Bothell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur faculty are certainly supporting that transition, trying to be accommodating,\u201d Navarijo said. \u201cI think everyone feels like they\u2019re in this interesting moment, this interesting experiment together. I think there\u2019s a mentality of making it work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being the resource<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Advisers who value face-to-face interactions are taking on the challenge of maintaining a sense of connection and togetherness, Wright said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s going to take a lot of effort from everyone across campus to help students feel that sense of belonging so they feel connected to the greater University of Washington Bothell,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advisers want to be the people who students turn to, Navarijo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to know our students\u2019 stories. We want to become the one person on campus where a student can be completely authentic and share concerns about their ability to succeed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
