{"id":24750,"date":"2024-03-05T21:00:47","date_gmt":"2024-03-05T21:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/?page_id=24750"},"modified":"2025-11-19T22:15:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T22:15:58","slug":"leave-of-absence","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/current-f-1-students\/enrollment-requirements\/leave-of-absence","title":{"rendered":"Leave of Absence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-highlight-paragraph-grey-background\">A leave of absence requires you to leave the US within 15 days of your request submission.<br>Your SEVIS record will be terminated for an Authorized Early Withdrawal.<br>Your current I-20 will no longer be valid for entry to the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It can be beneficial to take a leave of absence when you are unable to remain in a full course of study.<\/strong> Common reasons include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emergency situations outside the US (e.g. illness &amp; death of friends or family members).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-emergency situations outside the US (e.g. weddings &amp; other family obligations).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical scenarios that prevent you from attending class (It\u2019s often better to recuperate in your home country).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inability to enroll full-time due to academic planning issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requesting leave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.uwb.edu\/\">international student portal<\/a> to request your leave of absence. From the date of your request, <strong>you will have 15 days to leave the US<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISS will not withdraw you from courses. If you need to drop anything or withdraw, please see the Registrar&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/registrar\/policies\/withdrawing\/withdrawing-current-quarter-drop\">drop<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/registrar\/policies\/withdrawing\">withdrawal<\/a> pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to return to the US<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you requested leave <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">after<\/span> leaving the US<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>At least 30 days<\/strong> before you intend to return, please read and follow the instructions on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/new-f-1-students\/initial-i-20-request\/returning-student\">returning student page<\/a>. Note: You may need to plan 60 to 90 days ahead of time if your F-1 visa has expired.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will be required to provide new financial documentation to request an I-20.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your previous time in F-1 status will no longer count towards the minimum time required for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/practical-training\">practical training<\/a>. Please keep in mind you will need to complete one academic year (3 quarters) to be eligible for both CPT and OPT.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will receive an initial I-20, with a new SEVIS ID, to return to the US.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you requested leave <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">before<\/span> leaving the US<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>At least 30 days<\/strong> before you intend to return, email uwbintl@uw.edu and ask for <strong>&#8220;Reactivation&#8221; <\/strong>of your SEVIS record.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can only return if:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are returning within 5 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are returning to the same program of study.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have no registration holds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can provide new financial documentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You requested leave at the end of one quarter and left the US before the start of the next quarter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have an itinerary and can prove you will return to the US before the start of your returning quarter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reactivation of your SEVIS record allows you to use your previous time in F-1 status to count towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/practical-training\">practical training<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will receive a new I-20, with the same SEVIS ID as your previous I-20, to return to the US. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A leave of absence requires you to leave the US within 15 days of your request submission.Your SEVIS record will be terminated for an Authorized Early Withdrawal.Your current I-20 will no longer be valid for entry to the US.
