{"id":14072,"date":"2018-11-02T10:01:08","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T10:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=14072"},"modified":"2025-06-16T11:04:58","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T18:04:58","slug":"alumni-career-journeys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/news\/2018\/11\/02\/alumni-career-journeys","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Smith and Bolinger share career journeys with students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This fall IAS alumni Markus Smith and Kelsey Bolinger met with students in IAS faculty member <a href=\"\/ias\/faculty-and-staff\/jennifer-atkinson\">Jennifer Atkinson<\/a>\u2019s Capstone Portfolio course to share their career pathways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith is a Human Resources (HR) Recruiter for SNBL USA, a local biotechnology firm. While a student at UW Bothell, Markus worked as an assistant career advisor in Career Services and as communications assistant in the Office of Advancement and External Relations.  Smith also chartered the campus\u2019s first Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) student chapter, later becoming its president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/smith-markus-2018.jpg\" alt=\"Markus Smith\" class=\"wp-image-23845\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith\u2019s career in HR was sparked by his own experiences with job searches and networking. Realizing he could <a href=\"\/news\/october-2016\/career-path\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">build a career in HR<\/a>, Smith pursued a one-year, paid internship with Seattle City Light in workforce development. Since graduating in 2017 with a degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/undergraduate\/majors\/media-communication\">Media &amp; Communication Studies<\/a>, he conducted additional internships and worked as a recruiting coordinator for Tableau Software before joining SNBL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolinger graduated in 2016 with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/undergraduate\/majors\/media-communication\">Media &amp; Communication Studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/undergraduate\/majors\/society-ethics-human-behavior\">Society, Ethics &amp; Human Behavior<\/a>. She is a marketing manager at Center for International Career Development.
